Traditional and Modern Medicinal Uses of Red Tea - Honeybush
As a tea, high quality Red tea - Honeybush has a unique sweet honey-like aroma and flavor. De Nysschen et al (1995) found three major phenolic compounds in Honeybush red tea leaves: a xanthone cglycoside, mangiferin and O-glycosides of hesperitin and isosakuranetin, two flavanones. Further research found high levels of (+)-pinitol is present in Red Tea - Honeybush. Pinitol is used as an expectorant
(Beecher,1989) and also has anti-diabetic activity (Narayanan, 1987).
Red Tea - Honeybush tannin level is also very low at 0.45%.
Preliminary research indicates that Red Tea - Honeybush has similar health properties to
Red tea - RedBush. It is high in antioxidants, could retard aging and exhibits antimutagenic activity (Marnewick etal, 2000). Traditionally, Honeybush was used to treat digestive problems and sleeplessness (Joubert, 1996).
Both red tEa - Red Bush and Red Tea - Honeybush teas are highly recommended for pregnant women, babies and children. RedTea - Honeybush is also regarded as beneficial for breast-feeding women as it stimulates milk production.
